SDG Architecture Interior Renovations at Karl Flammer Ford Provide Function, Durability and Contemporary Beauty

SDG Architecture’s recent design and project completion of Karl Flammer Ford’s Tarpon Springs facilities featured major work in the showroom, office spaces and administrative spaces. Rod
Collman last renovated the Karl Flammer Ford showroom in the 1980’s with Fasnacht and Shultz Architects and although it was very well maintained, it had become dated and tired.

Some of the new design criteria established by the Flammers was to:

1) reduce the reverberation of noise within the space;
2) upgrade the lighting with a combination of LED recessed fixtures and track lighting to highlight and make the product sparkle like a jewelry counter;
3) install a porcelain tile flooring that would support the weight of the automobiles and complement the space;
4) give the sales staff nicer and more comfortable offices with visibility to the showroom floor;
5) select furnishings that were not only comfortable but practical and had lasting qualities.

With these parameters SDG Architecture did the following:

1) SDG selected the very best noise reducing acoustical tile with a fine line designer grid that USG ceiling systems could provide;
2) SDG Architecture worked closely with Electrical Engineering Consultant Billy Huettig to create the high quality lighting system possible;
3) SDG selected a high strength porcelain tile used by other Ford Dealerships all over the country;
4) SDG designed a layout to achieve not only visibility but also a clean modern look that is reflective of the Ford Motor Company;
5) SDG brought in CDS (Commercial Design Services Inc.) for selection of the furniture to meet the look and comfort desired by the client. CDS was able to bring the Flammers to their showrooms and sit and touch the furniture before they made their decision to purchase. The furniture was also ordered and installed by CDS making a seamless design process through move-in.

“SDG Architecture is proud to have been given the opportunity to help the Flammers to refresh their image that we helped create 30 years ago,” said Collman. “Client loyalty like this is priceless.”

Shorelines Design Group Makes It a Win-Win for Their Customer Base - How Do They Do It?

Dunedin, FL - based Shorelines Design Group has an excellent reputation for meeting client needs with creative solutions, cost efficiency and flare for style. Established in 1983 by Gary Badders, Shorelines Design Group provides residential design services to local quality builders, and home buyers and homeowners. How are they so successful with their client base?

“The diversity of our customers is a fact,” said Badders. “Their needs are all different, all unique. To be successful, we have to identify our customers’ needs. We are looking at people in different stages of life and the size and age of the family help to define the size and function of the home. Our approach is always the same with regard to assessing needs, wishes and budget.”

Badders identifies with young families and their need for an economical starter home that is right for them. These families have grown in size and they have achieved some level of success. He explains that most often his clients at this level include working mothers and fathers. “They are excited about a new house in a chosen community and school district and envision a lot in terms of what they want,” he said. “It is very important for me to listen to their vision, but they also rely on me to keep them on budget and from falling in love with a house they can’t afford. Therefore, we bring the builder on board early in the project to keep everyone on cost and start an open and successful relationship with the entire team.”

Badders explains that middle-age families, perhaps with teenage children, want the very best for the remaining years of their family’s life in a single home. Mom and Dad have achieved some further success and want to build a bigger home for family, friends and the activities that come with their time in life. “Bigger homes mean bigger budgets, but the responsibility for me is the same as before - deliver the house that they want while meeting their budget, and building a positive and successful relationship between client, designer and builder. Working with families at this complex stage in life is a wonderful experience,” said Badders.

A large percentage of Shorelines Design Group’s business is with people from out of state, including retirees with a different set of needs than in previous stages of life. Badders says that waterfront lots are high on their list, yet they are looking for ways to keep costs low. “Their priorities are not so much about size as efficiency,” said Badders. “They tend to be tech savvy with knowledge of what is new in energy efficiency. Increasingly, we see a growing trend in remodeling older homes on desirable property with ADA baths and additions for in-law or caregiver suites. Whether it is a new home or remodel, the same process of team building takes place so that our client is happy with design, build, budget, schedule and quality, from concept to completion.”

“Often, these projects result in the team being invited to the house after the family has settled in. We all get to celebrate with the happy and grateful owners, while enjoying the elements that make their home beautiful, comfortable and unique.”

Architect Rod Collman announces that SDG Architecture was selected as a design/build partner by Park Construction in 2015 to create a new facility for an International Corporate Manufacturer in Clearwater, Florida. Lightning Master Corporation designs and manufacturers lightning protection systems for the petroleum industry around the world.

“The new facility is in a tilt wall construction building of 30,000 s.f. and approximately one third was dedicated to the world corporate headquarters offices,” said Collman.  “A portion of the manufacturing area is dedicated to research and development, housing clean room areas and their design team of engineers. SDG Architecture worked with the client to develop and lay out the manufacturing equipment as well as the research and development departments.”

“Because of SDG Architecture and Park Construction’s professional expertise, the manufacturing portion of the facility was able to move into the space and maintain production while the business offices were being completed. This was a tremendous advantage for the company to continue its customer order production during the construction progress,” said Collman.

The facility was completed in approximately eight months from design through construction including permitting with the City of Clearwater. Other team members assisting with this international manufacturing facility were Jack Joyner Air Conditioning and Ventilation, and Wm. Huettig with Electrical Engineering Consultants.

“I am proud to have been a part of the corporation’s expansion program and to have played a small role in continuing this company’s growth and successful international business relations,” said Collman.

SDG Architecture Designed Renovation of Karl Flammer Ford Completed

Architect Rod Collman recently celebrated his first anniversary leading SDG Architecture after a long career with Collman and Karsky Architects. Among a long list of projects Collman completed in the last year is the building renovation of the exterior and interior of Karl Flammer Ford’s showroom, sales offices and administration offices. The work for the Tarpon Springs, Florida dealership includes a metallic exterior façade, an acoustic tile ceiling for sound control in the showroom; porcelain tile showroom flooring engineered for the heavy loads of new vehicles, and a contemporary reception desk. The project, like Collman’s return to practicing architecture in Dunedin, was something of a homecoming.

“I did the drafting work for the original building with Fasnacht and Shultz Architecture in the mid 1980’s,” said Collman. “Karl Flammer Ford was once in downtown Tarpon and at that time, the new location on US 19 was considered a ‘lonely outpost’.”

As the President of SDG Architecture, Collman continues to specialize in Commercial Design in his new association with Shorelines Design Group, who has provided custom residential design services for the past 25 years.

The renovation of the Karl Flammer Ford showroom and office facility was completed by Park Construction of Clearwater in six months. Karl Flammer Ford is located at 41975 US Hwy 19, Tarpon Springs, Florida.
