In September of 2014, the City of Dunedin began talks with the Toronto Blue Jays regarding amenities, size, renovation and new construction that would keep the franchise in Dunedin. Their User Agreement with the City of Dunedin expires on December 3, 2017. I have been privileged to work with Populous Architects, the architectural team of the Toronto Blue Jays out of Kansas City, and other members of the task force involved in evaluating potential possibilities. The results prompted a recent public presentation of proposed plans to modernize and expand the Blue Jays’ facilities.
After considering other potential Dunedin sites, it was agreed that the current location was the best choice, in no small part because neighborhood impact and traffic issues were largely already met. Three playing fields would be available for City use. The presentation explores new facilities, architectural styles, projected costs and funding, economic benefits, media impact, traffic, parking and environmental protection.
Once the hand shaking is done, it will be decided how best to select a contractor and architect. Taxpayer dollars are involved and a very transparent process must take place, including RFP’s and bids, and the ultimate hiring of an architectural firm and a construction company will be based on a variety of factors. It is an exciting time for Dunedin and I am happy thus far to be on the team!
